For patients with a particularly strong bite, heavy bruxism or limited restorative space, conventional acrylic dentures can be placed under considerable mechanical stress. Repeated heavy loading can increase the risk of denture fracture, tooth fracture or teeth becoming detached from the denture base.

Digital scanning instead of conventional impressions
One of the advantages of our digital workflow is that we can use intraoral scanning rather than conventional impression material to capture the patient's oral anatomy.
The digital scan provides a detailed 3D representation that can be used as part of the denture design process. This allows the denture to be planned digitally before it is manufactured.
Digital technology also allows us to consider factors such as available restorative space, tooth position, framework design and occlusion when planning the prosthesis.

Designed for strength and rigidity
For challenging cases, a cobalt-chrome alloy framework can provide a more rigid foundation than an acrylic-only denture.
The metal framework is digitally designed to provide structural support within the denture, helping to create a more robust prosthetic solution where space is limited or significant occlusal forces are expected.
This can be particularly useful for patients who clench or grind their teeth, where the denture may be subjected to repeated heavy loading.
However, no denture is completely fracture-proof. The suitability of a cobalt-chrome framework depends on the individual patient's anatomy, occlusion, oral health and treatment requirements.
Reinforcing the denture teeth
The design doesn't stop with the metal framework.
For selected cases, we can incorporate strategically positioned support pins within the denture teeth. These provide additional mechanical reinforcement and can help improve the retention of the denture teeth within the prosthesis.
This is particularly relevant in cases where the denture is expected to experience significant functional loading.
By considering the framework, tooth positioning and mechanical reinforcement together, the denture can be designed as a complete prosthetic system rather than simply adapting a standard denture design.

Is a cobalt-chrome denture right for you?
